A sex worker (name withheld) who abandoned an eleven months child in Balaka. Facts of the matter were that the sex worker left the baby with a woman she had no any other relations with and she went to Lilongwe for her sex work business leaving the child with no support. The Issue was reported to Female Sex Workers Association and speaking on the matter, the Executive Director Zinenani Majawa said that “we will trace the sex worker and work with relevant stakeholders such as the police and social welfare to help the child and bring the sex worker to justice. We do not condole to this type of behavior, we advise our members to access family planning methods to avoid unwanted pregnancies, this case has just confirmed my fears that access to Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) among female sex workers is still an issue that needs to be addressed and children of female sex workers need to be looked after”. The associations Programs Manager Precious Soko echoed Majawa’s statement that there is need for government and other stakeholders to increase access to SRHR among female sex workers.
